Business in Focus is the lead delivery partner in Enterprise Partnership Cymru (EPC), along with Menter Môn, M-SParc and an eco-system of support agencies across Wales. EPC has won the contract to deliver the Business Wales service on behalf of the Welsh Government, providing advice and support to entrepreneurs pan Wales.

The Business Development and Growth Service focuses on providing a wide range of advice to growing businesses through a variety of means including digital, telephone and face to face support.

EPC was successful in their bid to deliver both Business Wales advice services; Entrepreneurship and Start-up Service and Business Development and Growth Service.


Monitoring and carrying out appropriate interventions for clients depending on the needs identified via the digital Triage and initial digital diagnostic systems.

Supporting clients through their journey either in the Growth and development service or assisting with Relationship managed clients. Directing clients to digital resources, the Business Wales Ecosystem and wider support organisations. The Business Support Assessor (BSA), where appropriate, will also conduct a business diagnostic to assess and critically evaluate any barriers to growth, utilising diagnostic tools such as the Business Model Canvass, to identify the most appropriate support package.

Able to collate and evaluate information and data, the BSA will gather intelligence to summarise the current status of the business; to identify and forecast a range of KPIs potentially achievable from any BW intervention and support.

With a challenging number of growth clients to assist within the service portfolio, the BSA assists the advisory team and the BW ecosystem with project managing client journeys.


Responsibilities

  1. Where appropriate carry out an in-depth diagnostic assessment to determine the client’s business development support requirements. From the intelligence gathered, assess and critically evaluate the business’ growth potential and the current status of the business utilising growth diagnostic tools.
  2. Identify the most appropriate support packages, mapping out the most relevant support activities, e.g. eligibility to access Relationship Management Programme, to help clients efficiently and effectively overcome barriers to starting or growing their business. Support packages will be needed to address client needs whilst generating deliverable KPIs for the Business Wales service.
  3. Create the proposed support programme of business support activity from the BW Service/Team and map out the forecast of deliverable KPIs this activity will achieve.
  4. Where appropriate provide information, signpost and/or make referrals to the Eco System, specialist partner organisations and intermediaries, as appropriate. Document in accordance with procedures and within prescribed timescales.
  5. In collaboration with BDG advisory Teams, maintain client relationships with monitoring and supporting clients during the client journey at prescribed intervals. Review client’s progress and ascertain if any further support is required, cross-refer to retain engagement with the service or signpost to external partners as appropriate, and review client satisfaction.
  6. Monitor client activity and progress to maximise KPIs and other value-added outcomes.
  7. In collaboration with Business development colleagues, identify clients within the BW portfolio with the true potential and ambition for accelerated growth, facilitate timely handover to the Relationship Manager Programme, Accelerated Growth Programme (AGP).
  8. Support the Relationship Manager Programme, facilitating on a rotational basis, with the Ecosystem Participation Panel. Coordinate support for clients, liaising with BDG Advisory Team as appropriate.

Person Specification

  1. Working in a support services team to conduct advanced assessment of client support needs and deliver an effective service to a high standard of customer service.
  2. Working under pressure to achieve team targets/regional objectives.
  3. Working within an environment that requires accuracy, to be compliant to prescribed internal and external audited standards and procedures.
  4. Sound knowledge and understanding of how small local businesses operate and the needs of SMEs in the context of regional Welsh economies, influences from the UK.
  5. Using business diagnostic tools e.g. Business Model Canvass
  6. Experience and knowledge of general business support available from public and private sectors.

Relationship Managers work with a portfolio of programme eligible clients on a 1-2-1 basis using digital and face-to-face formats. The Relationship Manager applies a holistic approach, using their significant experience and knowledge of business to undertake a comprehensive diagnostic, developing a tailored Strategic Operational Growth Plan (SOGP) of issues and priorities.

Responsibilities

1. Utilise approved diagnostic tools to ascertain an understanding of a client’s business and identify barriers to development and growth.

2. Use approved business tools, e.g. Target Operating Model (TOM), Business Model Canvas (BMC), to develop a Strategic Operating Growth Plan (SOGP) for each client, identifying actions and objectives on a Roadmap for Growth (RFG) to maximise achievement of client’s growth potential.

3. Identify appropriate solutions and services, specific for each client. Utilising digital support platforms, signpost to appropriate resources.

4. Provide advice through a diverse range of methods; digital, e.g. webinars on appropriate digital platforms, 1-2-1 and 1-many online meetings, as well as face-to-face delivery. Undertake these activities in a professional and knowledgeable manner using the agreed training materials.

5. Make recommendations leveraging the full suite of services available in the Business Wales services, e.g. Specialist support.

6. Act as an honest broker for the spectrum of initiatives and services available in the public sector, e.g. WG Sector Teams, HE/FE Institutions, and/or services available from the wider Ecosystem of specialist service providers in the private sector.

Person Specification

1. Experience of running/managing a business OR significant experience at senior management level, with responsibility and influence for business strategy and operations that operated:

  • OR Proven experience of delivering business advice to a diverse portfolio of businesses that operated on a Regional/ National/ International basis;
  • AND/OR achieved turnover exceeding £750k per annum;
  • AND/OR experienced 15% growth in turnover and/or headcount in 2-5 years
  • AND/OR employs minimum 25 employees or more

2. Working knowledge of all AND be a specialist in one of the following:

  • Financial management; bookkeeping, record keeping for HMRC, HMRC requirements inc. NI, Insurances required e.g. Public Liability etc., Business Rates
  • Accessing finance in both public and private sectors
  • Taxation and Company Law
  • Marketing including social media
  • Sustainability, resource efficiency, decarbonisation
  • Environmental management systems and standards
  • Quality management systems and standards
  • HR and leadership and management issues
